Hey Mike I’ve been doing the one year challenge for about 2 1/2 months and I’m definitely seeing a change. I also just bit the bullet and bought your 30 day supplement package (the exchange rate is going to be eye popping) but I’m hoping it’s what gets rid of my onliques. I’ll let you know.
I know I’ve done well by losing a load of weight already and at times it has been extremely hard, but rewarding as my fitness level has improved ten-fold, but my belly fat percentage is getting me pretty low.

High-intensity interval training combines short, high-intensity bursts of exercise, with slow, recovery phases repeated throughout one short 15–20 minute session. It’s done at 85–100 percent of one’s maximum heart rate rather than 50–70 percent in moderate endurance activity.
I work 3-11 am and eat (clean) during this time. I get home and nap until 4 pm then go to the gym around 5. I’m thinking if my last bit of food was at 10am ish then by the time 5pm rolled around I’d technically be fasted correct? Hard to find a routine around my work schedule but this is what I’m working with. Thanks for any tips.
I’m lost on one point. My lifestyle is pretty seditary except for my lifting routine. I like to walk outside, or on the treadmill if it’s cold, for about an hour a day because it helps my mood. Is it still ok to do that, adding in some HIIT twice a week…. Will I be going against my goals if I do? Because otherwise I just sit around all day. My time walking re-centers me.
Eating the appropriate foods every day is important to maintaining your flat belly for good. So, in addition to following my flat-belly principles in the preceding section, you also need to try to incorporate the following foods daily:
Drink at least 8–10 cups of water every day. Hydration helps keep your energy level up, fills you up to help you reduce your portions at meals and snacks, and helps your metabolism function at its peak. So drink up!

Also, while I wasn’t eating breakfast, I wasn’t eating breakfast before, and I didn’t put on this fat. I remember my waist getting bigger despite working outside mowing lawns in the heat, and I didn’t understand it. Totally bogus. I wish it didn’t happen because it messed me up mentally, and I thought that I needed to exercise ultra harder to burn the weight.
Synephrine. This increases both basal metabolic rate and lipolysis, inhibits the activity of certain fat cell receptors that prevent fat mobilization, and increases the thermic effect of food (the “energy cost” of metabolizing food).
Sugary soda, packed with empty calories, is obviously a diet disaster, but even the no-calorie version can expand your waistline. A 2012 study published in the journal Obesity found that regular soda was associated with increased waist size and abdominal fat, but diet soda was associated with increased waist size, BMI, and total percentage of fat. One theory why this happens is the artificial sweeteners in diet soda don’t produce the responses your body expects when you eat something sweet. So, the sweet taste of a diet soda triggers a message to your body to expect an influx of energy, which won’t arrive since there are no calories in diet drinks. This interferes with your body’s hunger signals and causes you to crave (and consume) additional calories to make up for the lack of calories in diet soda. (Not to mention, diet soda has also been linked to stroke and dementia.)
Understand the health hazards of belly fat. Some of the conditions associated with visceral fat include cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer. Patients with high levels of belly fat were three times more likely to develop dementia.
We’ve covered this before, but it’s still the question we see most often; how do you burn belly fat? How to burn lower belly fat? What are the best exercises to target lower belly fat? How can I lose my love handles? There are many variations of the question but the answers are all actually pretty similar.
Real peanut butter is made with two ingredients: peanuts, and maybe some salt. You already know that peanuts give you belly-slimming monounsaturated fats, tummy-filling fiber, and metabolism-boosting protein. But peanuts have a hidden weapon in their weight-loss utility belt: Genistein, a compound that acts directly on the genes for obesity, helping to turn them down and reduce your body’s ability to store fat. (Beans and lentils have the same magic ingredient, albeit in slightly less delicious form.) But be careful of the brand you buy: if you see ingredients like sugar, palm oil, or anything you can’t pronounce, put it back. They’ll undermine any good the peanuts might do.
One easy way to find out if you’re carrying too much abdominal fat is to wrap a measuring tape around your body at the top of your hipbones. If your number is more than 35 inches, it may be time to take action. The good news: Getting rid of belly fat is simpler than you might think. With the right plan, it’s actually easier to lose than stubborn lower-body fat or the seemingly impossible to tone back-of-the-arm flab. Stick to these diet and exercise guidelines, and you’ll be slimmer — and healthier — by summer.

While whole flaxseeds are high in the fat-shrinking nutrient ALA, their hard exteriors often resist digestion, meaning you don’t necessarily get the nutritional bang for your buck. Go for the ground version (also known as flax meal), which has about 2.3 grams of ALA per tbsp, or get nearly a week’s worth of the good stuff by drizzling a little of the oil onto your salad. Studies have found flax to be helpful for cardiovascular disease symptoms like hypertension, according to a recent study in the journal Hypertension.
Lift weights. Weight training is a great tool for losing weight, toning muscles and it can actually help your body burn calories more efficiently. Experts recommend incorporating two to three weight-training sessions per week, with noticeable results in just a few weeks.
Sure, ketchup is tasty, but it’s also a serious saboteur when it comes your weight loss efforts. Ketchup is loaded with sugar — up to four grams per tablespoon — and bears little nutritional resemblance to the fruit from which it’s derived. Luckily, swapping out your ketchup for salsa can help you shave off that belly fat fast. Fresh tomatoes, like those used in salsa, are loaded with lycopene, which a study conducted at China Medical University in Taiwan links to reductions in both overall fat and waist circumference. If you like your salsa spicy, all the better; the capsaicin in hot peppers, like jalapeños and chipotles, can boost your metabolism, too.
Limit high fat foods. In addition to choosing sources of healthy fats to include in your diet, you should also try to limit or avoid certain types of fat that can increase belly fat and the chronic conditions associated with it.
Fat is actually the preferred fuel of human metabolism, and this can be traced back to our evolutionary roots. Avoid highly processed and genetically engineered omega-6 oils like corn, canola, and soy, however, as they will upset your omega 6:3 ratio.
Ok after reading some of the comments below, I’ve gotten my answer for #1! Seems like it is better to do weight lifting in the morning as opposed to the cardio, so I will switch that up! Sorry to have a repeat question in the thread!
Thanks, Mike. I have a question. I wake up very, very early every day (California-based stockbroker working NYC hours) – and exercising in the morning is impossible for me M-F. Could you recommend anything for someone in my shoes?
