Sara is a Boston-based registered dietitian who works with clients to improve their health by optimizing nutrition. You can find her running, sweating in hot yoga, cooking in the kitchen, dining out, or exploring. Eating Food-Mostly Plants, and improving our relationship with food, is the secret to lifelong health in her eyes.
Your parents weren’t kidding about how important veggies are for a healthy body. What they probably didn’t tell you, however, was that snacking on veggies is also one of the easiest ways to shed unwanted belly fat, too. According to a study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, opting for non-starchy veggies, like cauliflower, broccoli, and cucumber, as snacks helped overweight kids shed 17 percent of their visceral fat while improving their insulin sensitivity over a five-year period. Think snacking on veggies will leave you hungry? The 20 Most Filling Fruits and Veggies will have your belly satisfied in no time.
Diet, of course, is only part of the picture. Exercise, and the right type of it, is crucial to boosting your metabolism and shrinking both subcutaneous and visceral fat cells. If you’re not working out regularly, now is the time to start, using these guidelines:
Why would alcohol make me fat? Alcohol has the horrible property of lowering your testosterone level by increasing estrogens in your body like I explain in the article Increase Testosterone Naturally.
No, endless crunches aren’t the secret to a flat belly. Crunches, sit ups and planks may strengthen the muscles that lie underneath excess belly fat, but they don’t burn it off. Cardio exercise that raises your heart rate for an extended period of time is more likely to help you slim down that muffin top.
Moderate exercisers who stocked up on the antioxidants found in green tea—called catechins—were more likely to lose abdominal fat while exercising than those who didn’t take them. One study put the daily dose at 625 mg—the equivalent of two or three eight-ounce cups of green tea. (Follow these steps to make the perfect cup of tea.)
Sleep deprivation causes obesity. Sleep is vital for our metabolism and weight control. When we don’t get enough sleep, our hormone balance suffers, and the way we store and process carbohydrates is altered.
The soft, pinchable fat at your belly is subcutaneous fat and is less of a health issue, but makes your clothes tight and your tummy look pudgy. Visceral fat is some of the first fat you lose when you embark on a weight-loss program, but subcutaneous fat is more stubborn and may take a little patience.
Hi Mike! You’ve said before that you can lose fat without cardio (albeit more slowly), although you will need cardio to get single digit lean. I was just curious why that is? Wouldn’t you theoretically keep losing fat if you maintain a deficit and are diligent with your weight training? Is the reason because eventually your metabolism would slow down too much? And cardio helps prevent that?
My wife and I work out together in a fasted state in the mornings following your 5 day plan. We just take FORGE/Pulse in the morning and then Phoenix w/ lunch and dinner. We do our HIIT Cardio M/W/F right after our weight training. Typically we are in the gym for 90-120mins.
Can’t imagine giving up your favorite chips and cookies in the name of weight loss? You don’t have to. Just pre-portion your snacks into small baggies to ensure you stick to just one serving size. It’s the easiest way to eat your [insert favorite snack here] and have it, too!
“Burpees are such a great way to activate multiple muscles, get the heart rate up and burn mega calories,” says Kit Rich, celebrity trainer and co-owner of SHIFT by Dana Perri. “In one single burpee, you work your legs, arms and abs and you also elevate the heart rate to increase cardiopulmonary strength. If you’re looking to lose weight, incorporating them into your workout routine is a must.” Lori-Ann Marchese, fitness celebrity and owner of Body Construct LLC agrees: “This exercise will burn major calories, diminish fat and reveal your muscle tone. There is no other exercise that works as many muscle groups as the burpee.”
While the old thinking was that long, steady-state cardio sessions were best for burning fat, we now know that intense, fast-paced cardio is much more effective, says Buckley. “For maximum fat-burning and body-sculpting results, you need varied, intense workouts that include short intervals which leave you totally spent,” she says. Researchers hypothesize that this contributes to your body’s “after-burn” effect, where you continue to burn calories long after your workout is finished. Hope Pedraza, an ACSM personal trainer and the creator of inBalance, a San Antonio-based fitness and wellness studio, suggests doing intervals that alternate between exercises that work different muscle groups. After a 10-minute warm-up, spend 30 seconds doing as many reps as possible of squats, push-ups, kettlebell swings, and single-arm rows (plus these 7 most effective bodyweight exercises you can do). In fact, choose any of your favorite exercises—just make sure you alternate between exercises that work different muscle groups, which will help certain muscles recover while you work others, letting you amp up the intensity and minimize the amount of rest you need.
This is a great way to lose belly fat in one week. We suggest that instead of eating 3 full meals and overloading your digestive system, you should switch to eating smaller portions about 2 to 3 hours apart. Benefits would be less expansion of your belly and a supercharged metabolism which will burn up more fat.
Keep your goals in check: You should be working out and eating healthily so that you can have a better life – it should not take over your entire life. Having six pack abs or a toned-looking stomach does not necessarily mean you’re fit. Not all of us are meant to have low enough body fat to have an incredibly toned stomach – and some people may actually find that their health may begin to suffer if they get their body fat down that low. My main point is; fitness looks different on each of us; don’t compare yourself to others, and don’t ever put appearance related goals higher on the priority list than your health.
Turn one side of your body toward the pillar or cable and walk out until you feel slight resistance. Hold the handle in both hands at the center of your chest and push straight out in front of you. Pause for a second or two and carefully return the handle to your chest. You build strength by resisting rotation toward the cable.
If wondering how to lose tummy fat quickly, then include abdominal muscles workout in your ‘tips to reduce belly’ list. So this three times in the week. Crunches and leg raises for three sets of 20 repetitions should be done. Also, do planks by holding your body in a push-up position on your elbows for 30 to 60 seconds for four sets.
Common food sensitivities include dairy and gluten, both of which can result in an inflammation of the gut, making it even more prone to developing more sensitivities. Addressing these allergies can have dramatic impacts on weight loss, and even mood and behaviour.
Researchers have found that obese people tend to have greater numbers of Firmicutes bacteria than people of normal weight. Studies suggest that these types of bacteria may increase the amount of calories that are absorbed from food (39, 40).
If you love four-alarm food, lay off the Tabasco, barbecue sauce, and garlic for a few days while de-bloating. Spicy foods stimulate the release of stomach acid, causing irritation. Give dishes a flavor boost with in-season fresh or dried herbs such as dill, basil, mint, sage, tarragon, and rosemary. You can also use curry powder or lemon or lime juice—all perfect with fish or chicken. Also, steer clear of black pepper, nutmeg, cloves, chili powder, onions, mustard, horseradish, and acidic foods such as catsup, tomato sauce, and vinegar.
Start each day by making a large pitcher of “spa water”—that’s water filled with sliced whole lemons, oranges, or grapefruits—and make a point of sipping your way through at least eight glasses before bedtime. Citrus fruits are rich in the antioxidant D-limonene, a powerful compound found in the peel that stimulates liver enzymes to help flush toxins from the body and gives sluggish bowels a kick, according to the World Health Organization. For added belly-blasting benefits, brew yourself a pot of green tea, one of the five best teas for weight loss.
The best way to shrink fat cells overall is to lose weight. But make no mistake: Visceral fat is not easy to shed. Start by figuring out your current daily calorie intake. Then cut that number by one quarter. Researchers from Columbia University found that simply reducing daily calories (without adding exercise) can shrink fat cells by up to 18 percent, particularly those in subcutaneous fat. Health bonus? Fat shrinkage also improves the body’s ability to use insulin, thereby guarding against diabetes.
