Carb cycling isn’t something I have tried properly. My opinion would be its only something you need to try once you get weight/bf down and things stop moving. Its also not something you can use instead of a calorie deficit to lose weight… You still need a calorie deficit to lose weight even if carb cycling?
I see from your other posts I may actually be in a true plateau and need to increase activity and decrease calorie intake, but I honestly still struggle to recover from my current activity level, and I am hungry a lot 🙁 Not sure I can handle eating any less lol.
Don’t buy your tickets to Bonnaroo just yet; the kind of acid that will help you slim down is the stuff right inside your cabinet. A 12-week study published in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry reveals that obese study subjects who made vinegar part of their diet dropped more belly fat than a control group, and other research suggests that acidic foods, like vinegar, can increase the human carbohydrate metabolism by as much as 40 percent.
It’s based on science. How would you explain overweight people who eat less than someone who is skinny and has a high metabolism? Genetic studies are based on science. I think that because you’re fit – you’ve learned to find the way your body loses fat and gains muscle. I have friends and coworkers that train and diet like dogs. They torture themselves and still cannot lose weight. I know that some people use carbs differently – some can switch from carb to fat burning more easily, some utilize fast twitch or slow twitch muscle fibers more easy and can therefore gain muscle and clear themselves of lactate more quickly. I have a combo of both, so I can use that. Some metabolize caffeine slower – and stay even while others crash after 1/2 hr of drinking it. It’s all to do with your alleles. PM me if anyone wants more info.
Hey, Mike! Thank you for all of this information you’ve put up to help get an understanding of why some of this weight loss and definition building. I’ve been working out regularly with a home DVD and doing couch to 5k and then on to 10k for for almost 11 months now. I started at 292lbs and am now stuck at 210 and I feel like I’m building muscle in my shoulders and arms, but my belly is stuck in that puffy area. I cannot seem to ditch it!
Mike, great article! I am a female on a hunt to drop my body fat to 18-20%, I am currently at 24%. I know as you say genetics play a huge part in it all. I want to be leaner but still have a little bit of meat on my bones. I currently weight lift (and no pumping for me, I love lifting heavy and I’m constantly pushing myself to lift heavier) 4 times a week with cardio 2-3 times a week. I currently take BCAA before 15-20 minutes before I workout and I also take a multi and CLA. I also take protein after I workout. I think I will add in the fasted cardio in the AM and continue to lift during my lunch break. So how many days of fasted cardio would you suggest for me? And should I add an extra day of weights? My current regimen is Mon and Thur: Legs and shoulders, Tue: Tris and Chest and Wed: Back and biceps. Any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks, Felicia
My weight loss doesn’t seem to follow a fixed pattern , sometimes I don’t lose the slightest of a pound in a week and then the next week I will lose 1 pound making it 0.5 pounds in a week as an average. I think I’ve committed 1 mistake and that was that I didn’t recalculate and reduce my daily intake according to my weight loss in these 10 weeks. Would that have caused a hindrance in my progress ?
The featured article lists three common exercise mistakes that could be sabotaging your efforts to lose that stubborn belly fat. This includes choosing the wrong kind of workout, doing the exercises incorrectly, and/or doing exercises that aren’t challenging enough.
4. Stress: Everyone has stress. How you handle it matters. The best things you can do include relaxing with friends and family, meditating, exercising to blow off steam, and getting counseling. That leaves you healthier and better prepared to make good choices for yourself.
I stopped going to gym due to work commitments. I never really lost all of my pot belly, so went back aroun 6 weeks ago. My problem is I am losing 1-2 lbs per week but don need to lose weight anywhere else apart from my stomach. So to conteract the weigh loss and started doing weights as well as cardio. I want to lose my stomach but dont want to lose anywhere else or I will start to look scrawny.
Hey Ingry, are you sure you lost muscle? How fast did you lose weight? Did you get weaker on your lifts? If you do a ton of cardio, don’t eat enough protein, eat at too big of a deficit, etc. you can lose muscle. I recommend eating high protein, focusing on heavy compound lifting, and using HIIT cardio to support fat loss. Your calories don’t seem too low, but if you were losing more than 2lbs per week, you should increase your calories. Check this out: http://www.muscleforlife.com/the-ultimate-fitness-plan-for-women/
Instead, opt for high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Several studies have confirmed that exercising in shorter bursts with rest periods in between burns more fat than exercising continuously for an entire session.

Diet question: When I started cutting, I was obese (over 30% BF) with about 50 lbs of fat to lose before I get down to 10%. Are there any special instructions for length of the cut? If I am averaging 1lb. fat loss per week, then it may take me upwards of a year before I would be ready to bulk per your book. My energy balance is good, pretty good macros, and I’m still losing 0.5 lb – 2 lb fat per week, so I am not seeing any issues. I just wanted to know if there were any long term effects of going on a cut for that long? You mention reverse dieting after several weeks, but I assume that is only for people that are stagnant and/or much lower BF%. Thanks!
While some researchers have stated that there are certain health benefits to moderate alcohol consumption, I completely advise against it mainly because the negative effects cannot justify the potential benefits that you my reap from it. To learn more, read more on how alcohol harms your body.
Skip the crunches — for now. Abdominal crunches and sit-ups should build strong muscles, but you might not see them under belly fat. In fact, crunches might actually make your stomach look bigger as you build up thicker abs. Instead, if you strengthen your back muscles, your posture will improve and pull in your belly. Alternative core exercises:
This is ratio of weight in kilograms to the square of height in meters. This parameter helps doctors judge whether the person will suffer from heart disease or strokes. Those having a BMI of 25-29.9 are considered overweight and those with a BMI of 30 are considered obese. However, this parameter is not always accurate in measuring belly fat. In fact, you can measure your belly fat with a measuring tape in front of the mirror, and set your own targets to reduce belly fat. Looking at the mirror and checking regularly will motivate you to lose the unhealthy fat lining your abdomen.
Hey mike,I am 30years old, with 70 kg 5″11. Body fat % about 15. As per your article working out in morning will get me to archive body fat to 10%? I am planning to change my routine to have hi it, weight lifting as you mentioned in this article.
Say cheese! Adding some extra calcium to your diet could be the key to getting that flat stomach you’ve been dreaming about. Over just 12 months, researchers at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville found that obese female study subjects who upped their calcium intake shed 11 pounds of body fat without other major dietary modifications. To keep your calcium choices healthy, try mixing it up between dairy sources, calcium-rich leafy greens, fatty fish, nuts, and seeds.
Choose vigorous exercise. When it comes to burning body fat, not every exercise is created equal. For the next 2 weeks, choose high-intensity workouts like running, swimming laps, road cycling, rowing or boot camp over easy to moderate exercise.
While i do see that i have lost weight from 142 lbs to 136 lbs and my other parts of the body shaping up, i do not see the stubborn fat around my belly going away.. I workout for about 6 days a week which includes 1 day of 30 mins HIIT. Please suggest if this plan that i am following is sufficient or i need to do anything more ?
Crunches can also cause lower back pain, slouching shoulders & forward head posture. The Reverse Crunch doesn’t cause these problems, but again: spot reduction is a myth. To lose your belly fat, you need more. Keep reading.
Even walking can be adjusted for an HIIT workout. Do 3 shorter, fast-paced interval walks (alternating faster walking with a few slower periods) and 2 walks at moderate intensity each week. You will burn 3 to 5 times more visceral (belly) fat.
Hey Michelle, that’s possible (although there are a few hormones at play, not just cortisol). But if that’s the case, it’s really a bit of a waiting game. It can seem like nothing is happening, and then one day you’re 3 pounds lighter. Eventually your weight will even out, but in the interim, it’s still generally a good idea to drop your calories and/or increase your activity levels.
