If you’re diet consists largely of bread, pasta, cereal, rice and other grain based foods, it is going to be challenging to lose weight. Don’t believe the old government endorsed food pyramid that promoted grains as the base of your diet. Most of your carbohydrates should be coming from vegetables for optimum weight loss. If you decide to keep the grain based carbohydrates in your diet, be sure to keep your portion sizes small.
This composite works in few different ways. The parsley is great source of vitamins that are necessary for normal digestion. The lemon is very helpful for burning the fat. This composite enhances your metabolism.
Balancing on left leg, extend right leg out low in front of body, toe pointed, as upper body twists to right. Return to starting position; repeat on opposite side. (Tip: Inhale when feet are together and exhale on rotation, drawing abs in tighter on exhalation.)
Still try to consume as many veggies and fruits as possible. Even if you don’t enjoy carrots or salads, do what it takes to get yourself to eat them (e.g. plug your nose and chase bites of veggies with water like you did when you took medicine as a kid). You really have to try everything. Also, stick with the lean meats like fish or poultry. If you don’t eat a healthy diet, you’ll have to exercise more.

I’ve decided to do HITT cardio training 2x a week, but I’m unsure of the duration? Since I’m ‘skinny-fat’, I’m afraid I might lose more weight in my arms or legs which makes me looks scrawny. Will doing HITT x2 week help? Also how long should I do it for?
Your articles are great. I agree with all you have said. I started my amazing journey in late September last year and am still going. I always excersize in a fasted state. Im 2hrs on the treadmill walking with 3-4min sprints every 8mins or so. I only eat 1 cucumber,1 avocado and a celery soup each day. I just made up my own diet and it worked for me. Ive lost 40kg. Just about to start weight training though so will have to change my diet now. I dont seem to have lost much muscle mass so far but this is the first week I have felt tired so Im thinking that could be a sign. I had been researching cosmetic surgeons for excess skin, but now I think I will see what I can achieve on my own first. Wish me luck. Poppy
Follow the 80/20 rule. This rule says to have a small splurge 20 percent of the time, but this splurge must be within reason. If every 5 days you eat an entire pizza and a gallon of ice cream, you’re going to gain weight back no matter what you do the rest of the week.
Cucumber is a water based vegetable that helps you to curb hunger. When feeling peckish, have some cucumber slices and a glass of water. You will feel satiated with a very small calorie hit. What’s more, all the fluid you’ve taken in in the vegetable and your glass of water will help you flush toxins.

Mike, your articles and site reads a bit like an infomercial, which almost caused me to skip it. Glad I didn’t because it was actually very good and informed advice with a strong scientific foundation. I’m assuming that you have marketing reasons for the way you structure the site, but it has a tendency to turn off people who are suspicious of gimmicks and fads. It’s a bad presentation of excellent information in my opinion because it triggers all kinds of instinctive alarm bells. Still, it’s convinced me to take a look at your books and do some more research on your supplements.
Hey mike, I am currently 135 lbs, looking like 13-15 percent body fat and just like many others seem to be putting so much work into the gym, started implementing clean eating but still seem to be getting nowhere. I am able to lift 5x a week and include cardio when necessary. My work schedule is M-F 5am-2pm. I want to implement fasted training, how would you come about this and does intermittent fasting also need to come into play when incorporating fasted training?
Diet, along with exercise, forms the corner stone in any strategy to lose belly fat. Whether you have a lot of belly fat to lose or you just need to burn a little belly fat, you need to pay careful consideration to your diet. Research shows that there are some foods that appear to increase belly fat, while other foods can help you lose belly fat.
Naturally sweet recipes in Zero Belly Diet were the key to test panelist Isabel Fiolek’s dramatic 13-pound weight loss. “I happen to have a big sugar addiction,” Isabel admits, “But the recipes have been surprisingly satisfying for my sweet tooth.” Isabel also made dramatic health strides: A checkup after her six weeks on Zero Belly Diet revealed she’d dropped her total cholesterol by 25 percent and her blood glucose level by 10 percent.
To get a flatter, more defined stomach, you need to concentrate on core exercises that tone and strengthen the abdominal muscles. However, you should not keep your hopes tagged with only these exercises. In order to see an overall effect, as in a flattened stomach and a strong, toned, and healthy body, you need to perform other fat-burning exercises as well. This way, you will teach your muscles to be able to lose the excess fat. The following stomach toning exercises are effective, simple, and don’t require any equipment.
Hello Mike! Reading again your article, another question appeared. Actually I’m in 73kg 22% fat. Being in caloric deficit I’ll arrive to 72 kg, but at that weight the caloric deficit of 20% wont be the same amount as when I had 73kg, the values of TDEE for 72kg are new ones.
“By losing estrogen, you lose some of the normal contour of your body,” explains Michael Roizen, MD, chief wellness officer at the Cleveland Clinic and the founder of RealAge.com. “Instead of weight settling on your hips, it goes to your belly.”
I’ve been following your program for years now and stuck at 20% bodyfat… All down to my diet but also because I was so undermuscled in the beginning I wasn’t worried about fat loss until recently. Now I’m ready to tune it in and would like to be between 15-18%. It may not sound like a big difference but it’s enough to drive me nuts.
I didn’t eat enough calories a few days like 1000 prob because I just wasn’t Hungry the pounds just fell then I literally drunk with the chicken at the end of the night I then went up 5 pounds. I’m just getting a little frustrated every time I let go for the one night I lose my progress lol I want it to be consistent progress while being able to enjoy myself once or even twice a week without ruining my progress. Leafy greens like collard greens, watercress, kale, and arugula may not be on your everyday list, but they all contain a compound called sulforaphane. This nutrient has been shown to act directly on the genes that determine “adipocyte differentiation”—basically, turning a stem cell into a fat cell. A healthier intake of the compound means a healthier body weight for you. And just a scant teaspoon of vinaigrette will help your body absorb the fat-soluble nutrients.
I do have a question though. You might have said this and I simply missed it, but would you recommend some type of post work-out protein isolate after working out? I know your consuming protein afterwards, but that’s a slower metabolized type of protein that won’t help with the recovery of your muscles as fast as an Isolate would. What’s your take on that?

Fitness should be your first priority because if your are healthy, only then will you be able to perform a variety of activities with the same energy level. What is the secret to a flat stomach? There is no secret; it is sheer hard word and a strict control on your diet which will give you the desired results. Choose exercises that target the core muscles and tighten your abs by giving you a smaller tummy.
Remember, think long term. If your body can handle it, I strongly suggest you try Tabata Interval training after your strength training by doing sprints, as this is the most physically demanding cardio you can do to get the best results for fat loss.
Instead of replacing these foods with healthier whole-grain bread products, which contain filling fibers that can sometimes trigger bloating, sub in vegetables for the week: Instead of rice, try cauliflower “rice” made by grating cauliflower.
Hi Mike, after taking these supplements how long do you have wait to work out. I work out (after wake up in fasted state) at home so I wait about 30 minutes before I work out. In those 30 minutes I’m getting my weights ready. Now when I start working out I feel a little sluggish but as I get into my routine I feel more energy. I would like to have more energy right from the start because I start with dead lift or squats. Question 2, how long should this energy spike last? I try to get my work out done in about an hour and a half. Thanks.Tom
I’ve been trying to cut fat and have read BLS, use TSC, and have read the article above and the ones you’ve directed me to. I’m following all the diet advice in the above. I’m at ~1800cals in a 20% deficit and following
My Cut Meal Plan has me at a total of 1369 cals (134.7 protein, 136 carbs and 33.1 fat). For lunch I’m at 395 cals (40.9 protein, 41.7 carbs and 7.1 fat) and includes 5 ounces chicken breast or turkey breast, 7.5 ounces white potato or 1 cup cooked couscous or 3/4 cup cooked quinoa and 3 ounces of veggies.
A starch is a complex carbohydrate. It’s a polysaccharide, so it contains a long string of sugar units, particularly glucose. This explains why starches cause a big spike in insulin production and become problematic. They require digestion before becoming available to the body. They’re first broken down into simple sugars and then the body can use them as energy.
Good article. I have been perplexed by belly fat since I gained what I call sh** weight 16 years ago (at age 27). I call it sh** because I put this on without stress, medications, excess calories, beer and cigarette consumption, and poor sleep habits (I was going to bed around 11:30-midnight every night or so).
1. The Bicycle Exercise – best for targeting the six pack muscles and the obliques. To do this exercise, get into a supine position with hands at the back of your head. Bring knees to the chest while lifting shoulders off the floor. Slowly bring your right elbow towards your left knee as you straighten your right leg. Switch sides and continue in a pedaling motion. Do 1 to 3 sets with 12 to 16 repetitions.
