I just have a question regarding Phoenix. You state that you take 1 serving of Phoenix before your workout in the morning and 1 before your workout in the afternoon. Does it mean that you take 8 capsules a day (a serving being 4 capsules)? It is indicated not to go over the dosage (2 capsules twice a day) on the container that’s why I’m wondering.

Some great breakfast foods include any one or two of the following: oatmeal 125ml or half a cup, eggs (2), 1 slice of wholegrain bread with a thin spread of nut butter 15 ml or 1 tbsp), low-fat cottage cheese (125 ml or half a cup) with fruit, plus any serving of fruit and a glass of reduced fat milk, soy milk or almond milk, tea or coffee without sugar. Some wholegrain breakfast cereals with milk would also be fine but read the label. You want to see higher protein than fat or sugar.

Mike, I’m new and this is my first cutting session before I start bulking for the first time. I’m still at around 13-14% body fat. Should the contents of this article be something I should be considering yet? Or is this information mainly for men at 10% or below who are trying to lose that last bit of fat? From what I’ve read in your book, I should be at my goal size before considering dropping below 10% fat – which could be quite a while.

Surprising isn’t it? But just a couple of fruit juices or sodas a day (or even a Starbucks) can easily add 1000 calories to your diet. And these aren’t good calories either. The calories are all from sugar, which causes you to release insulin, which causes your body to store extra fat (insulin really is the enemy when it comes to losing belly fat).

Found in sardines and salmons, fish oil is a bliss food. Loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for everyone, it should definitely be included in your diet. If not consumed directly, there are a lot of fish oil supplements available in the market too. These supplements help in burning fat, thus, leading to a flat belly.

2. Sweep: Start with basic abs tuck (standing crunch). For that you have to lift one knee using the abs, and bend the other knee to sit slightly on the ground. Bring the rib cage to the bellybutton so that the spine is in C-curve position. Simultaneously, squeeze the oblique on one side to crunch while reaching down for the opposite foot.

Hi, Im a 15 year old male, 5’9″ and i weigh about 147 pounds. Im kind of skinny fat (im about 18 percent body fat) and my stomach looks fairly big. I was wondering what i should do to mainly reduce my stomach size, but also gain muscle in the process (i would prefer not to recomp, im not good at keeping exact track of macros). Ive been going to the gym for only around 2 months now, so im still a beginner.

By the time you hit your 40s, a host of physical changes converge to coax the fat that may once have collected on your hips and thighs — the bane of pear-shaped women — to land on your tummy instead. If you’ve always been an apple shape whose fat naturally gravitated to your middle, aging only intensifies the pattern. Here are some of the factors responsible for that extra cushioning.

“I absolutely love the low plank exercise because it creates a lot of stability around the entire core,” says Brian Flynn, owner of Body Unique in Brooklyn, New York. “This helps you run a lower risk of back pain. It’s also a fantastic exercise to help slim down your waistline.”

Omega-3 fatty acids, the nutrients that make fatty fish such nutritional-champs, play a key role in reducing belly fat storage, all while keeping us full and satisfied. But thankfully you don’t have to down an entire fillet or even turn on the stove to reap their stomach-flattening benefits. Just

What many people don’t realize is that cortisol is a schizophrenic hormone when it comes to fat loss. It increases fat storage due to the actions it has on the major fat storing enzyme called lipoprotein lipase (LPL). But ironically, it also speeds fat burning by stimulating the major fat releasing enzyme hormone sensitive lipase (HSL). Notice the name of this enzyme is not “calorie sensitive lipase”? That should tell you something about the nature of fat loss. So, cortisol can be your best friend or your worst enemy. By itself it does not have much of an impact on belly fat. Unless, it is “hanging out with” insulin.

A diet high in protein may protect you against insulin resistance, Aronne says. One easy way to up your intake is to add Organic Whey Protein to your smoothies, meals, or snacks. (You can also meal prep these 6 protein-packed recipes that will actually last all week.)

Walking puts all of the abdominal muscles to work. Make sure you swing your arms and contract your midsection while you walk, and maintain a brisk pace. Once you get your body accustomed to a daily walk, you’ll hate to go a day without it. Walk for at least thirty minutes each time to achieve the aerobic effect, and be sure to drink plenty of water.

Almonds, peanuts, walnuts, pistachios — at GH, we’re nuts about nuts! People who snack on nuts may have lower abdominal fat than those who munch on carb-based treats, according to a 2015 study in the Journal of the American Heart Association. Nuts are rich in monounsaturated fats, a heart-healthy (and more satisfying) pick than their grain-based counterparts.

Doing core exercises is still important, though. Crunches and Janda sit-ups primarily work the largest abdominal muscle, the rectus abdominis, which flexes the spine. This muscle compresses the abdomen to a point, but there are other muscles you need to pay attention to, as well.

To get the most of this natural source of probiotics, seek out yogurts like those by Fage, Dannon, and Oikos, which contain lactobacillus. In a 24-week study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, women who consumed this type of probiotic lost twice as much weight as those who didn’t regularly include it in their diets. Besides eating yogurt at breakfast, try using plain or Greek yogurt in chicken or salads in lieu of mayo or sour cream.

Whatever it is you are normally eating for carbohydrates, reduce it by exactly one half. If you eat a bowl of pasta a day, instead eat ½ a bowl. If you eat a sandwich with two slices of bread, try instead to eat a sandwich with one slice of bread.

Thanks for the article! Great read, as usual 🙂 what are your thoughts on Effedra? It’s been really popular in my gym as of late. I’m kind of skeptical. Does it work as good as people say? Would it interfere with Forge?

Well, like reducing hunger and cravings, making the process of dieting more enjoyable, primarily by increasing the overall feeling of well-being, makes it easy to stick to the plan and see it through.

“Although there is no magic cure for getting rid of belly fat, eating adequate protein and cutting down on refined high glycemic carbs can help,” says Martha McKittrick, a New York City-based registered dietitian. “Protein helps keep you feeling full longer and the body burns more calories breaking them down compared with carbs and fat. Lastly, protein doesn’t cause insulin spikes like refined (“white” or sugary) carbs do. High levels of insulin have been linked to more belly fat—and this is especially true as we get older,” warns McKittrick. Swap white toast for greens or fruit salad at brunch, pick Greek yogurt over a bagel for breakfast and when you’re dining out and opt for grilled chicken or fish instead of a pasta dish.

I want to prioritise fat loss and hold onto muscle. And to try and do both activities fasted. Problem is I have quite a small window to fit everything in due to my long and late working hours. Often 6M-2AM.

Fish oil has omega-3 fatty acids in it. Omega 3 acids such as icosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid and linolenic acid help in breaking down fat while reducing fat storage around your waistline. If you can’t take fish oil, have fish rich in omega 3 fatty acids.

What a great answer, perfect. I’ve been following all your tips and I’ve passed from 71kg 22%BF to 69.3 kg 20%BF in 2 weeks. I don`t know if its OK but I’m still very motivated to achieve the 6-10%BF range before June! 😀

Studies also show it is one of the most effective forms of exercise for reducing belly fat. However, results are mixed regarding whether moderate-intensity or high-intensity exercise is more beneficial (27, 28, 29).

You just need to have a creative way of putting spice on your vegetables, meats or soups. Simply add spice to vegetables by using low-fat spicy hummus or, if you are cooking vegetables, you can add crushed red pepper flakes. Do the same with meats. You can also practice eating spicy snacks in moderation.

Doing ab workouts might strengthen your core, but it won’t actually zap fat — and that’s why you need to eat healthy. “You exercise for 30 minutes compared to the 23-and-a-half hours that you don’t exercise. You need to eat the right things,” says Harris-Pincus.

Have adequate water to flush away those toxins. This will give you dual benefits of a glowing skin and a flat tummy. Drinking water does not only mean having gallons of water in a day, but also drinking healthy drinks like green teas with anti-oxidants and fresh vegetable and fruit juice.

The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, such as salmon, play an essential role in preventing depression. A tasty crust of pistachios adds not only a flavourful crunch but also a boost of vitamin B6 – a key player in emotional health and quality sleep.

Reduce your intake of grains (especially refined kinds). All grains are not bad (especially sprouted or gluten-free grains), but they won’t help you lose weight or recover from a health condition. Instead, focus on vegetables and fruits that are low in sugar and high in fiber (like raspberries in the chart above).

Eventually, your body finishes processing the food, and insulin levels drop to a low, stable baseline level, where they remain until you eat food again. This is known as the “postabsorptive” or “fasted” state.

These are the staple of my diet. I have them every day. Then I rotate other meals around them. These are the meals that give me a large proportion of my daily nutrients and calories without me even thinking about it.

If you don’t like running, try jogging instead. Research suggests that jogging is more effective in breaking down unwanted fat when compared to weightlifting. This is a form of aerobic exercise that is extremely useful for fighting obesity and staying fit.

I’m a 26 year old 6’5 skinny fat guy who weighs 86Kilograms. Just a year ago I was just skinny (almost like anorexic) but with continuous efforts I have gained good amount of muscle mass in the entire body and look way healthier than before (with alot of fat around the waist and stomach 🙁 unfortunately).

GREAT ARTICLE! My entire household has been dieting for weight loss. (Me-44, my wife-39, my mother in law, 67) I have restricted myself to 1000 calories a day, high protein, low carb, weight training and at least 40 minutes a day on the treadmill. I have lost 50 pounds. My wife and mother in law are both diabetic (My wife-diet controlled, my mother in law-insulin dependant) so they can’t do my diet. So I have some questions. What should our calorie restrictions be? How should we be working out? Supplements? Can they do a fasting workout? Any suggestions for their diet targeting weight loss? I’ve thrown a lot of questions at you so if you don’t have the time for all of this, I totally understand.

A natural source of melatonin, which helps lower cortisol, tart cherry juice can help you achieve a good night’s sleep. Getting only 6 hours of sleep versus the recommended 8 hours means that you can have up to 50% more cortisol exposure – and that can lead to more sweet-tooth cravings and belly fat. Elevated cortisol also keeps you restless and alert when you don’t need to be, making it hard to fall asleep. Drink an 8-ounce glass in the morning and 2 hours before bed for sweet dreams. To get the full benefit, drink this juice at a scheduled time every day.

Berries are great fat-fighting foods. Science proves that these stop fat cells from getting bigger. These also help fat cells in producing ‘adiponectin’, a hormone that helps reduce inflammation while lowering blood sugar.

You can lose tummy fat without exercise and it is just about going back to the basics. It is time to go back to eating healthy, staying active, living a stress-free life, getting enough sleep and disciplining yourself.

Want to know how to lose belly fat? Then it’s time to introduce your body to intermittent fasting, which is best approached as a shift in lifestyle and eating patterns, not a diet. There’s no need to count calories or measure grams. Simply focus on extending the duration of time between eating the healthy foods you already eat, with a particular emphasis on healthy fats and proteins.

2. Decline Bench Sit Up Ceiling Touches: This great exercise works on your shoulder, abs and lower back. Sit on the bench with the weight on your lap. As you move backwards, lock your arms and raise the weight above your body. Touch your back to the bench and use your abs to sit up. As you sit up you should keep your arms and weight pointed to the ceiling.

than a year now. I started out by doing just pure cardio and I lost around 12pounds in a span of 3 months. Since I wasn’t a big guy in the first place, I lost fat pretty much from every part of the body except my belly. And then my interest changed to lifting. So after 2-3 months of cardio, I basically just moved to lifting and fell in love with it. And since I had started lifting, I was eating good amount of food daily to keep my protein intake high. It’s been a year now since I have been lifting. I am getting good muscular shape in every part of the body except my belly. My belly is still the same size as it was one year ago. I just don’t know how to get rid of it. I want to get ripped and have a

Ramp up the cardio. Do aerobic exercises which get your heart pumping, burn calories quickly and facilitate fat loss all over the body, including your belly. You can’t “spot-burn” belly fat, but it’s usually the first to burn off when you exercise, regardless of body shape or size.[10]

So I understand that for shifting to the maintenance mode I would have to bump my daily calories to 100-150 and maintain it during 7-10 days and then re-adjust to another 100-150 daily increment throughout the subsequent week and so on until I reach my TDEE. Is this correct?

While some people have an easier time than others, almost everyone has to deal with hunger and cravings to one degree or another. It’s just human nature to want to indulge in food after accidental or intentional deprivation, and whether it’s normal or not, it’s still interfering with your goals.

It’s the best fruit for weight loss. That means Pink Lady over Granny Smith, watermelon over honeydew, red grapes over green ones. The higher levels of nutrients called flavonoids—particularly anthocyanins, compounds that give red fruits their color—calm the action of fat-storage genes. In fact, red-bellied stone fruits like plums boast phenolic compounds that have been shown to modulate the expression of fat genes.

Diet-wise, I am a vegetarian, but I try not to fall into the usual vegetarian health traps. I don’t eat processed meat substitutes, I eat cheese, but not a crazy amount, and I don’t eat a lot of refined carbs. Maybe one serving of pretzels, white bread, or pasta a day. I don’t go crazy with it. My main sources of protein are nuts, eggs, yogurt, tofu, and quinoa. I also rarely drink alcohol and do not drink any soda (even diet). I have been tracking my calories, and it seems to be amount 1,800-2,000 calories a day.

I’ve been cutting for 4 months now. I’m 40 yrs at 5′ 10″. I’m down to 64 kgs. However, my body-fat % is still around 22%. If I drop below 59 kg I would technically be under weight. So, what do i do – keep cutting till i lose belly fat even though i might go under-weight?

You know that your cardio sessions are crucial when it comes to burning the layer of fat sitting on top of your abdominal muscles. But it’s still important to work those abs even as you’re trying to shed fat, says New York City-based personal trainer Adam Sanford, founder of Adam Sanford Fitness. His favorite move to do that? Holding plank on a BOSU ball. “It’s more challenging than a normal plank where your hands are on the floor, because the BOSU tests your balance,” says Sanford. “When your body tries to find control as your balance is challenged, your abs, obliques, and deep transverse abdominal muscles are activated.” Strengthening these core muscles also helps increase your metabolism, ultimately helping you to burn more calories and fat. (Here are 6 other ways to make a plank work your abs even more.)

From the sound of it, you might think leaky gut only affects the digestive system, but in reality it can affect more. Because Leaky Gut is so common, and such an enigma, I’m offering a free webinar on all things leaky gut. Click here to learn more about the webinar.

A few weeks ago I was sitting in a Denny’s, and they had a menu on the table which gave a breakdown of how many calories is in all of their food. I looked down the list, and it made me raise my eyebrows. Do you know what the highest calorie items were? Have a guess…

In addition to the guidelines I mentioned above, Authority Nutrition lists3 several more effective strategies that can help you shed unwanted abdominal fat. Here are five of the recommendations that I highly agree with.

These machines usually come with workout recommendations that include cardio and total-body strength training as well as a nutrition guide. These measures are what help you lose belly fat, not the ab machine.

If you’ve ever felt bloated after a salty meal, it’s not in your head. Excess salt causes water to move from your bloodstream into your skin, which is why a daily dose of Doritos will give you a puffy look. Nearly 90 percent of people consume more than the recommended 2,300mg sodium per day. So even if you’re not pouring on the table salt, you’re likely getting more sodium than you need through other sources such as canned foods, salad dressing, deli meats, and even some dairy products like cottage cheese. (But keep in mind that you do need some salt and that the low-sodium diet rule is being debated.)

8. Eat More Fat. Fat doesn’t make you fat. Bad nutrition and lack of exercise do. Eating fat actually helps fat loss. Your body won’t stock fat as easily if your give it a constant intake of healthy fats.

Running at an incline rather than on a flat surface has been shown to increase total calorie burn by as much as 50%, says Jill Penfold, a Los Angeles-based personal trainer. Whether you’re outside on a hill or at the gym on an inclined treadmill, start out walking for 5-10 minutes, then jog, suggests Penfold. “Your heart rate should elevate pretty quickly as you pick up your pace,” she says. Maintain the jog for 5-10 minutes, then pick your pace up again and start running. “This doesn’t have to be an all-out sprint,” says Penfold, but you should be working hard enough that you couldn’t have a conversation with someone running next to you. (If you’re over 40 and about to start running for the first time, here are 8 things you need to know first.) Spend 5 minutes running, then drop your pace back down to a jog. Continue alternating 5-10 minutes of jogging with 5-10 minutes of running for 30-45 minutes.

“how to lose belly fat at the gym |can’t burn belly fat”

But that doesn’t answer my question. The bottle says four caps is a serving, but it also says four caps is only half a dose. According to the chart on the bottle a “full dose” for me is 7 caps while a “serving” is four caps. So if I’m supposed to take “2 servings” before lifting, am I supposed to take 8 caps (4+4, which is two “servings” but only two half-doses) or 14 (7+7, which is two full doses but almost four “servings.”) The wording here is very confusing and with 5 days lifting and 4 days cardio will mean the difference between a bottle lasting two weeks or as little as four days.

Hi Mike. Thanks so much for this article, it has explained exactly everything that I had questions about! I do however have a question about macros- what should my P / C / F ratio be if I am in a 20-25% deficit at 1776 calories / day (per your calculator). It defaults to 40% / 40% / 20% but I’m just curious if it should be more like 30% / 50% / 20% ? There is so much info out there about macros and it’s hard to find a simple straight answer, especially because everyone is different. I also lift (moderately heavy- I’m a total beginner) and do HIIT cardio 6x a week. I weigh 155lbs at 5’5″. I’m not set on a real “goal weight” as I’m just going off of how I look and feel more so than the scale. I’m 24 years old and have a desk job. My goal is to develop lean muscle and lose body fat and then once I’m happy with that I would like to moderately bulk and start the process again. Thanks so much for any advice/guidance you are willing to give. I’m glad I stumbled upon your website!

If you’ve dieted for any period of time, you’ve experienced this. Certain areas of your body, like your chest, arms, and face, tighten up quickly but others, like your belly, hip, and thighs, seem to not change at all.

Look at your relatives and see if they have body fat around the abdomen or stomach, or if there is a history of type 2 diabetes in the family. If that is the case, you will need to be extra vigilant in avoiding or restricting refined processed carbohydrates, and even high carbohydrate natural foods.

Would that then enable me to go back to 3-4 strength trainings – no cardio- routine and maintain a very low body fat? If not what would you advise in terms of maintenance strength trainning schedule given that I am not a huge fan of cardio,,, 😉

Hey Mike, I’ve been following the protocol you outlined here for a couple of weeks now but am seeing little-to-no results. I’m wondering if it has to do with what I’m eating after my training/my training schedule. It looks like this:

Ornithine. Ornithine is an amino acid found in high amounts in dairy and meat that reduces fatigue in prolonged exercise and promotes lipid oxidation (the burning of fat for energy as opposed to carbohydrate or glycogen).

Also, while I wasn’t eating breakfast, I wasn’t eating breakfast before, and I didn’t put on this fat. I remember my waist getting bigger despite working outside mowing lawns in the heat, and I didn’t understand it. Totally bogus. I wish it didn’t happen because it messed me up mentally, and I thought that I needed to exercise ultra harder to burn the weight.

If you tend to pack the pounds around your middle rather than your hips and thighs, then you’re apple shaped. This genetic predisposition means ridding yourself of belly fat will be harder, Dr. Kashyap says, but not impossible.

Even most personal trainers and athletes agree that the quality of your diet is the No. 1 factor to address in order to lose belly fat. Once you improve your eating habits, ab workouts and core exercises are like the icing on the cake. Doing about 2–4 ab workouts weekly can strengthen and define your midsection while you also work on losing body fat all over through improving your diet, sleep and stress.

I am currently roughly at a 10-11% bodyfat and eating around 2000 calories and having 3-4 strength trainings – no cardio. I would like to go down to 6-7% bodyfat. I am planning to reduce slightly my calories and implement additional gym activities to accelerate the fat loss…. 2 questions..

To banish stubborn belly fat, you have to ramp up your workouts. In a study published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, people who completed a high-intensity workout regimen lost more belly fat than those who followed a low-intensity plan. (In fact, the low-intensity exercises experienced no significant changes at all.)

Great read, and as always my favorite source for information on the web. I’ve been doing great, since early June I’ve went from about 23% body fat to what looks and measures to be 12% and have retained virtually all muscle (and recomped unintentionally early on).

You are very knowledgeable in weight training and losing weight in a healthy way. I just happened to find my way to one of your articles and I am impressed at how well you back your articles with research and personal story.

Hi, Im a 15 year old male, 5’9″ and i weigh about 147 pounds. Im kind of skinny fat (im about 18 percent body fat) and my stomach looks fairly big. As you get older, your body changes how it gains and loses weight. Both men and women experience a declining metabolic rate, or the number of calories the body needs to function normally. On top of that, women have to deal with menopause.

Beer drinkers always have a pear shape: belly fat & man boobs – especially as they get older. Alcohol also stresses your liver which has to overwork to clear the toxins. This can get in the way of building muscles.

Aim to take 10,000 steps a day. In one study where men reduced their daily steps from about 10,000 to less than 1,500 (without changing their diet), their visceral (belly) fat increased by 7% after just 2 weeks.[5]

Fermented foods like miso, tempeh and sauerkraut contain probiotics, a.k.a. friendly bacteria that help boost immunity, regulate gut function and banish bloat. Unsweetened plain Greek yogurt and skyr can provide probiotic benefits too. Choose ones that have five strains or more of bacterial cultures per 6-ounce serving.

I’m not disputing that genetics are important. Metabolisms can differ a bit, and body fat, lean mass, etc. are somewhat genetically determined as well. Plus, some people’s metabolisms are generally more adaptive.

Is there a point in using Forge while reverse dieting or while on maintenance calories? I still have more than half a bottle left but I’m about to get done cutting. I’m not sure if I should finish it up or just save it for a later cut.

I am a little confused about the “fasted” training. You say that you want your insulin levels to be low before/while you are exercising, but you also say that you take rice dream with your protein shake before you exercise. How can you work out in a fasted state with that shake before your workout?

However, if you need to lose weight fast, then consider dropping your carbs down to 50 grams per day. This will put your body into ketosis, killing your appetite and making your body start burning primarily fats for fuel.

Sit-ups can help, mainly with building muscle and toning the area – but you will still need to do some cardio and eat a healthy diet to see significant fat loss. As Step 1 says, you can’t really lose fat only by targeting a specific area – you have to make a comprehensive lifestyle effort.

In your post here it says —> About 4 Hours After a Light Dinner of Protein and Veggies, If Doing Cardio That Day:About 15 minutes before doing your cardio, I take the following: (10 grams BCAAs or 3-5 grams leucine, 100 mg caffeine,1 serving of Phoenix or 2 pills green tea extract, .2 mg per kg of yohimbine)

Having an active hobby — and if you don’t already have one, developing one — is important. Get engaged in some kind of sport, whether it’s a group activity or something you can do alone. Essentially, if an activity is pleasant to you, you’ll continue to do it.

Confused…. You wrote: “I take 3 caps of Forge… I do this twice per day”. You also wrote: “I take 1.5 servings of Forge twice a day” But the serving size for Forge is 4 caps. 1.5 servings would be 6 caps. So do you take 3 caps twice per day or do you take 6 caps twice per day?

Yes I am trying my best to incorporate all of your tips for losing fat in my routine! But I guess I just have to persist with my workout program and wait for the results to appear. Ive had 2.5 months of cutting and still I feel that I have a lot of stubborn fat to lose, so do you recommend to continue cutting since I already feel like having lost quite a bit of size.Is it ok for a skinny guy like me to cut for 4 or more months after just 5 months of proper bulking?

Eat more protein. Ideally, all your proteins should be lean, such as egg whites, fish, chicken or cuts of red meat with very little marbling or fat. Protein requires more energy for your body to digest it and it builds muscle.

I’m 5’9 150 pounds and I’m assuming my body fat percentage is probably under 15. However, like you iterated in this article, it is incredibly hard to shed that fat around the waist area, any simple tips?

Many observational studies prove that people with a higher protein intake have lower levels of belly fat. It also raises your metabolic rate, making you more likely to build muscle during and after exercise.

The visceral fat is more quickly stored and more easily burned. This is because being deeper in the body it has a greater blood supply and is more sensitive to the fat burning catecholamines than is subcutaneous fat.

It can be hard to find time away from your baby in the early months, so try these exercises that you can do with your infant. Take caution when completing them. You may want to practice first using a doll or a rolled-up blanket or towel that’s the same size as your baby. Do the moves full-out only when you’re certain there’s no danger of dropping your baby. Make sure you’re fit enough, and have a good enough sense of balance, to assure your and your baby’s safety.

Hey there…BIG fan of yours…I tell everyone that asks me about my progress about your website. Especially…Thinner, Leaner, Stronger. I’m a 41 year old female, started out at 5’6 and 160 pounds (YIKES!). Been working with a personal trainer for a year now and have lost 30 pounds…gone from a size 10 to a 4 and have seen GREAT progress. I still have some belly fat, outer thigh and of course the glutes still need some work. Everyone tells me I don’t need to be any smaller…I would agree with that but do I train to lose that last bit of fat that’s hanging on or do I just focus on building muscle?? Not sure my best course at this stage. And ONE more question…how long would you say it typically takes to build up those glutes for that “gravity defying” booty! Feeling like there’s slow progress there. Thank you for any direction you can give me!

Insulin is the hormone that’s released when we consume carbohydrates. It helps take glucose (sugar) out of the bloodstream and brings it into cells to be used for energy. However, when too much glucose remains in the blood, it’s stored away for later use as body fat.

Lie on your back with your arms extended backwards, and your legs raised to a 45-degree angle. Bring your arms up and lift your shoulders off the mat while raising your legs until they are perpendicular to the floor. Return to your starting position. Do 3 sets of 15 repetitions and gradually build up.

E.g. If I eat 500g of broccoli with 250g of extra lean ground turkey with some Tabasco at around 1pm, will I be in a fasted state at around 4pm? The whole meal is 420 calories (33g Carbs, 72g Protein, 4.4g Fat).

No, you would not be fasted in that case. Fasted training is when your insulin levels are at baseline, and that meal will raise your insulin, despite the lack of carbs. Being in a fasted state usually translates to about 5 or 6 hours since your last meal.

Getting enough fiber can help. Hairston’s research shows that people who eat 10 grams of soluble fiber per day — without any other diet changes — build up less visceral fat over time than others. That’s as simple as eating two small apples, a cup of green peas, or a half-cup of pinto beans.

I just noticed there is a new product from your line – Legion Forge – and I’m considering to add this. Please let me know if the below would give me the same (if not better) fat-loss / maintain muscle growth results:

Omega-3 fatty acids, the nutrients that make fatty fish such nutritional-champs, play a key role in reducing belly fat storage, all while keeping us full and satisfied. But thankfully you don’t have to down an entire fillet or even turn on the stove to reap their stomach-flattening benefits. Just

than a year now.

5. Ab belts, ab-rockers, ab-loungers, and other infomercial ab-gimmicks… they’re all a complete waste of your time and money. Despite the misleading infomercials, the perfectly chiseled fitness models in the commercials did NOT get their perfect body by using that “ab contraption”… they got their perfect body through REAL workouts and REAL nutrition strategies.

Hi!! So I’m a 5’7, 133pounds woman with around 19-20%bf, trying to get leaner. I lift and do cardio 6x a week (4sessions of hiit and 1-2 of steady state) I used to be in a deficit for very long periods of time (around 1400-1600cals a day) for like a year straight, seeing no change basically and being not that strict with my numbers but always staying in that range. Then I reversed diet up to maintenance which is like 1950, stayed there for a week and then started to cut, so I cut my cals back to my 156g of P, 130g of C and 30-35g of fat. The reverse diet went very well, i didn’t gain fat. But in the cut im not seeing much difference, i think maybe I was too lose with my tracking or had some hidden calories or something. But im already 7 weeks in and im feeling the effects im vert very hungry and tired and my workouts aren’t the same so I need to revere back to maintenance but i want to continue to cut. and reverse diet takes like 6 weeks .what should i do?

Add activity to your daily life. Haul boxes or bags one at a time up the stairs. Squat and stretch while cleaning the house. Dance during commercial breaks when you watch TV. Play hide-and-seek with your children around the house. March in place while washing dishes and talking on the telephone.

Vitamin C is important for the secretion of carnitine, a compound that helps the body convert fat into energy. Besides, it also helps block cortisol, a hormone that is secreted by the body under stress. A spike in the cortisol levels is the main reason for abdominal fat.

Some amount of belly fat is normal – it helps to cushion the bones and organs and provide protection. Well, excess fat might become a cause of concern. Don’t worry. You can cut any type of fat by exercising and following a strict low carb diet. There are a number of reasons for belly fat in teens and adults.

For a variation, try walking backward or walking in a zigzag pattern to help keep your muscles guessing. You should not include baby in this activity until you’ve mastered it and are certain of your balance.

The results: When participants moved from the high-carbohydrate diet to the diet high in monounsaturated fats, the distribution of their body fat changed and fat was moved away from their midsection. Pretty amazing.

SMART goals are: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time constrained. For instance, instead of saying, “I want to be stronger,” your goal is something like, “I want to be able to bench press 100 pounds, three times in a row, three months from now.” Or, “I want to lose 10 pounds in the next 4 months.”

You might even need to graze all day long sometimes, and look like a cute koala. The body will need some time to get used to the new routine and ‘the new you’, so you should really stay away from the unhealthy cycle of highs and lows. And the way to do is to avoid hunger.

Belly fat is linked with higher risk for developing various health issues. It is a strong risk factor for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even some types of cancers, says Samuel Klein, MD, the director of the Center for Human Nutrition at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.

“how many miles to lose belly fat lose belly fat exercises”

There’s loads of advice out there regarding how to lose weight quickly, and often with the least possible effort involved. And while your primary reason for wanting to learn how to lose belly fat may be due to vanity, there are also loads of convincing health reasons for wanting to trim down your waistline as well.

3. Tabata: Tabata is another form of interval training and involves 8 rounds of 20 seconds exercise followed by 10 seconds rest. Sounds easy enough but exercise should be done at a high intensity. This exercise can be done using rowing machines, dumbbells or thrusters. This is a tough exercise and is best for those who have very less time in their hands.

Belly fat does tend to be a stubborn area to lose fat and an easy place to put on fat, but as long as you continue getting losing fat and getting leaner using proper training and dieting, you WILL eventually lose the belly fat. And it won’t take too much training either. At the max, I recommend 4-5 hours a week of weightlifting and 2-2.5 hours of cardio. That’s the most I do, and I get down to 6% BF.

Hey Julia, losing weight is simply a matter of being in a calorie deficit. The 5:2 diet is pretty similar to some alternate-day fast protocols. From what I understand, it’s 2 days a week of extremely low calories, and then 5 days at maintenance calories. As long as you eat at your actual maintenance during the 5 days, and don’t binge, you should be in a deficit for the week and lose weight over time. If that works for you, that’s great. Most people would choose a more traditional approach pf being in a 20-25% deficit every day instead.

I weighed 90 kilos had suffered from high cholesterol and hypertension. But all this behind, thanks to a method that I found on the Internet, this method made me lose 24 kilos in 8 weeks, now I weigh 56 kilos and I follow my goal are the 50 kilos, I have high cholesterol, I feel more healthy and strong.

Stretch your abs before you exercise them. Try to do your cardio before you do abdominal exercises and stretch, so that more of the work will focus on your core, rather than tight hips, legs or the neck.

Sit with your feet lifted off the ground and your knees bent into your chest. Place your hands on the floor just behind your bottom. Engage your core by pulling your belly button into your spine. This is your starting position.

Exercise in small bursts. Research shows that interval training, or alternating short bursts of energy with brief resting periods, can improve muscle and build endurance more quickly than traditional exercise.[9]Interval Training for Weight Loss:

But you’ll lose the most fat by doing HIIT, or high-intensity interval training. This training technique involves working at full throttle for short intervals — typically 10 seconds to a minute — then recovering at a slow pace or resting for a minute or two. It increases your metabolism after a workout, since your muscles need to work hard to get “back to normal.” HIIT also burns more belly fat than traditional, steady-pace cardio, according to Penn State University.

These are the staple of my diet. I have them every day. Then I rotate other meals around them. These are the meals that give me a large proportion of my daily nutrients and calories without me even thinking about it.

Thanks for the article! Great read, as usual 🙂 what are your thoughts on Effedra? It’s been really popular in my gym as of late. I’m kind of skeptical. Does it work as good as people say? Would it interfere with Forge?

Any more and you’ll overdo it! The key factor that makes interval training so effective is intensity. To reap maximum results, you need to work out at maximum intensity, with rest periods in between spurts.

Instead of replacing these foods with healthier whole-grain bread products, which contain filling fibers that can sometimes trigger bloating, sub in vegetables for the week: Instead of rice, try cauliflower “rice” made by grating cauliflower.

Hey Mike! You say fasted state is reached within 2-6 hours after you ate (depending on how much you ate). So how do you know if you’re in a fasted state? I have no idea how to check my insulin levels 🙂

Hey Mike, what’s your take on undereating after a day of overeating? I’m usually pretty good with my diet but every so often I’ll go to some party or event or something and just won’t be able to stop eating haha. Since I’m clearly going over my deficit (as well as maintanence level) at that point, is it ok to subtract the “overage” amount of calories (or at least a portion of it if it was really a lot) from my intake the next day to offset the overeating as much as possible?

When you’re leptin-resistant, your body no longer hears its own signals to stop eating, burn fat, or pass up sugary foods. As a result, you feel hungry, crave sweets, and your body continues to store fat even though it already has more than enough. When your body routinely stores this excess as visceral fat, you increase your risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, vascular disease, atherosclerosis (hardening of your arteries), and an increased thickness in the walls of your heart.

How to do it: Find a pull-up bar. While holding yourself up (pulling the shoulders down and back as much as possible), keep your feet together and exhale to bend the knees and pull them up to just above a 90-degree angle. Pause for a second at the top, and slowly lower the legs back to the hanging position. For an added challenge, perform the leg raises with straight legs (pointing the toes away from you) and add in a twist to the right and left (alternating on each rep) to hit not only the transverse abs but also the internal obliques. To stimulate the heart rate even more, perform a pull-up between each hanging leg raise. Be sure not to swing the legs and to stay in control of the motion! Perform 3 sets of 10-12 raises. —Eric Sand, National Academy of Sports Medicine certified personal trainer, lead instructor at Bespoke Premium Cycling Studio in downtown Los Angeles

And, unfortunately, as women age, the belly increasingly becomes fat’s destination of choice. “When a woman reaches her 40s, excess fat is likely to accumulate around the abdomen,” says Steven R. Smith, MD, an obesity expert at Florida Hospital and Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Center in Orlando. “This belly fat is often just a redistribution of fat to the abdomen rather than a gain in total fat.” So even a thin woman may be chagrined to discover that, as her estrogen levels decline during perimenopause, she is suddenly sporting a “meno-pot.”

“When clients come to me wanting to lose weight around their midsection, the first thing I look at is their carb intake,” says Lauren Minchen MPH, RDN, CDN. “Going really low carb is not necessary to lose belly fat, but I generally find cutting out starches, fruits and desserts at dinner is effective for belly fat loss. Plus, it’s easier than having to tally your carb number throughout the day!”

Excelsior! Thanks for information. I also like the idea of not having to take BCAA before working out, HMB pills (Forge) are much more convenient, There are enough of all the amino acids in the whey that I look forward to when I finish my workouts.

This is amazing!! I weighted 153lbs before I started and it’s been around 2 months and I weight 106.2 lbs (i just weighted myself right now) I did these workouts double! Morning and night drank lots and lots of water and my waist is less thank 24 inch I have an average butt enough to say I have an hourglass figure and please don’t give up!! This will totally help you but you should try more than just one app! This will surely help you! but please maje sure you stay healthy! Fighting!!!❤사랑해~~

No matter how much or how well you exercise, all your efforts may come to naught if you’re still eating processed foods, too many carbohydrates, and the wrong kinds of fat. Eating right is key for any kind of weight loss success, and it’s downright crucial when you’re trying to get rid of visceral fat around your internal organs. As noted in the featured article:2

Success breeds success. Track progress accurately so you know where you are and stay motivated to keep working at losing your belly fat. Don’t just read this post and go back to what you were doing. Take action. Lose your belly fat.

Belly fat is maligned for its way of tampering with any outfit that doesn’t involve a muumuu, but really there’s something way worse about the stuff: When white fat expands in your abdomen, nestling deep among your organs, it sets you up for some serious health trouble.

Steer clear of alcohol for the next few days to maximize your body’s belly-flattening capabilities. Alcohol causes dehydration and may slow your body’s ability to eliminate that excess weekend waste, so if you had a little too much to drink this weekend, start chugging the H20. It’s best to eliminate that occasional glass of wine, beer, or hard alcohol this week while you’re on a skinny jeans crusade—all are high-acid beverages that can irritate your GI tract and cause swelling.

If you do not sleep enough, your metabolism slows down. On top of that, if you are tired your body needs compensation. And how we compensate ourselves? We start eating or drinking something sweet or munch on a packet of chips.

Fantastic article! I was just wondering if you had any alternatives to the caffeine intake (including the green tea extract). I rarely drink coffee and I don’t ingest it for personal reasons. Thanks! 🙂

Why would alcohol make me fat? Alcohol has the horrible property of lowering your testosterone level by increasing estrogens in your body like I explain in the article Increase Testosterone Naturally.

Some people have a strange habit of chewing something or the other all day long. For meeting this craving of chewing, they often end up eating gums, which do no benefit to the body at all. An amazing swap is to try munching on dry fruits like almonds, which will actually be beneficial to your body and provide it with those necessary nutrients at the same time.

That weight gain would have made more sense about six years later, when I was not only over 30, but I wasn’t sleeping at a set time (new job with evening hours. I was sleeping all over the map), and my diet was worse.

You can restore your sodium-potassium equilibrium by increasing your potassium intake to an optimum 4,700 mg per day. To do this, you need to eat about 4½ cups of produce daily, including the especially rich sources that are mentioned below. As you rebalance your system, you’ll flush out the extra sodium along with the water. Presto: less puffiness. Watch out, though. Food is a safe source of potassium, but supplements are not. They can cause potassium to build up in your body and potentially lead to abnormal heart rhythms and even heart attack, especially in people with kidney or heart problems, says Leslie Bonci, RD, MPH, chief nutrition officer at Come Ready Nutrition.

I have been trying to identify the reason but honestly I am lost. I have followed the same workout routine (4 days a week weight training + 4 – 5 days cardio) which was supposedly designed to maintain muscle while on caloric deficit.

Great answers! I’ll read your article and see the information. Also, if I reduce my protein, my macros percentages also will vary. I’m now in 40%CH 30-35%Prot 25-30%Fat. That aren’t the percentages you say we should stick in your articles, is that a big problem? When bulking, how should those percentages be?Thank you very much!! I continue reaching my goals and still motivated, there is a new and single vein in my belly! LOL 😀

Dieting and exercise go hand in hand. If you thought that only dieting will burn your belly fat, you are wrong. If you really want to lose weight, you need to include an hour of exercise in your daily routine for targeting and reducing belly fat. Here, we have compiled a list of 16 exercises that can help you reduce belly fat faster than you thought it would take:

Diet, of course, is only part of the picture. Exercise, and the right type of it, is crucial to boosting your metabolism and shrinking both subcutaneous and visceral fat cells. If you’re not working out regularly, now is the time to start, using these guidelines:

Any more and you’ll overdo it! The key factor that makes interval training so effective is intensity. To reap maximum results, you need to work out at maximum intensity, with rest periods in between spurts.

If you have a big-time sweet tooth, grabbing a grapefruit could help cut back on calories from late-night treats. “The interesting thing about grapefruit, and citrus fruits in general, is that they provide an intense, satisfying flavor that rarely gets chanced by sweets,” Taub-Dix says. “A grapefruit or citrus fruit after dinner could keep you from reaching for a sweet dessert.” Yeah, that’s right: a 52-calorie grapefruit can satisfy just as much as a 400-calorie piece of chocolate cake. Sorry, brain, but you just got played.

So, if you feel fine doing it, and you’re training fasted, go ahead and take Phoenix on an empty stomach. If you don’t feel good taking it on an empty stomach, totally fine. Just take it with food. 🙂

Possibly live like the wolf may be the ideal life style. They do not run if they don’t have to or are not chasing down food, or running from danger, or playing, or have the sudden urge to do so. It is those fast escapes and chases that are so necessary.

Hey Mike, I usually do cardio with weights in the morning before I eat once a week, then I do HIIT 3 times a week before I eat. I’m fine with the workouts I’m just having trouble with my macros. I started the year at 215lbs and I’m now down to 160lbs I don’t want to lose more weight if anything I should gain some, I just want to lose fat. Should I base my calories and macros as If I’m just trying to gain weight and build muscle and the fat will basically fade away over time or what should I do?

By the time you hit your 40s, a host of physical changes converge to coax the fat that may once have collected on your hips and thighs — the bane of pear-shaped women — to land on your tummy instead. If you’ve always been an apple shape whose fat naturally gravitated to your middle, aging only intensifies the pattern. Here are some of the factors responsible for that extra cushioning.

3. Snack smarter. Snack foods like pretzels and crackers are carbs that don’t do you any favors. Skip these easily over-consumed carbohydrates (even the whole grain ones) and snack on 1oz of macadamia nuts (10-12 kernels). Macadamia nuts are packed with monounsaturated fats, and research consistently finds nuts to be a superior snack for weight loss and heart health than pretzels or similar snack foods.

not forgetting that some good habits and a proper nutrition such as Jogging, running, cycling, brisk walking, swimming ,and low calorie diets, is necessary, not only to loose belly fat within a specific time , but to maintain the health of the entire body.

I have 25% of fat and going gym at night after work. Do whey protein helps me to cut my belly fat or should i take fat burner?? If yes at what time cause i go to gym at night and go for work in the morning

Researchers at the Biomechanics Lab at San Diego State University took a look at some popular abdominal exercises and ranked them. Results of the study revealed that exercises that require constant abdominal stabilization and body rotation resulted in the most muscle activity in the abdomen.

I am planning to start Forge, but before I do that wanted to understand what qualifies as fasted training. I take a scoop of whey protein (25 gms protein) and 5 egg whites and 1 whole egg about an hour and a half before weight training, so no carbs. Is that Ok?

If you’re keen on reducing your tummy fat quickly, it’s advised that you cut out alcohol from your diet completely. If that sounds too severe (life is for living, right?), then aim to drink cut down your intake by capping the volume you drink in one sitting to one or two glasses.

Although, you can feel a significant difference in one week, however, for desired results you have to continue your efforts for a long time for satisfied results. Here are the effective tips for doing the same.

Fruit juices are loaded with sugar, and don’t carry the benefit of fiber that comes with eating the fruit itself. If you’re trying to lose belly fat, keep your consumption of fruit juice to a minimum.

Diet question: When I started cutting, I was obese (over 30% BF) with about 50 lbs of fat to lose before I get down to 10%. Are there any special instructions for length of the cut? If I am averaging 1lb. fat loss per week, then it may take me upwards of a year before I would be ready to bulk per your book. My energy balance is good, pretty good macros, and I’m still losing 0.5 lb – 2 lb fat per week, so I am not seeing any issues. I just wanted to know if there were any long term effects of going on a cut for that long? You mention reverse dieting after several weeks, but I assume that is only for people that are stagnant and/or much lower BF%. Thanks!

We’ve all been there: Staring at the cookies and knowing we should eat the yogurt in the refrigerator instead. They’re the same number of calories, so what’s the difference, right? Surprisingly, a ton, especially if you’re hoping to shed belly fat from your frame. While there’s no magic bullet for weight loss, eating the following foods will definitely help.

Visceral fat is also called “organ fat” or “intra-abdominal fat” — and it’s one of the primary reasons why you must learn how to lose belly fat. This fat lies in close proximity to the vital organs of the body, including the liver, kidneys and other digestive organs, meaning it’s a real health concern. Fat is actually similar to an organ, in that it releases compounds in the blood and alters hormone levels. (4)

I’ve been doing advanced HIIT-type workouts for a couple of years now and after an overseas move (and turning 31) I can’t seem to get back to my normal weight (55-56kg), I was 53-54kg at peak fitness just over eighteen months ago. I’m around 57-58kg, 25-26% fat (Withings scales), doing HIIT 3-4hrs a week – mostly mornings before I eat and overall I eat very well, more protein than carbs etc.

Routinely squeaking by on five hours or less per night increases visceral fat levels, according to a 2010 Wake Forest University study. As you likely already know, 8 hours is the number to aim for and is ideal for losing belly fat. These 20 ways to sleep better every night can help.

Why It Beats Bloat: Once air from any source reaches your digestive system, you experience it as gas and a distended belly. Eating or drinking quickly, sipping through a straw, sucking on hard candy, and chewing gum can make you swallow air.

Eat foods that have been shown to reduce belly fat specifically. A 2008 Pennsylvania State University study found that eating whole grains rather than refined grains resulted in a greater loss of fat around the midsection. A study appearing in the July 2007 issue of “Diabetes Care” found a diet rich in monounsaturated fats resulted in the greatest loss of belly fat compared with diets rich in carbs or saturated fat. Examples of belly-fat-fighting foods include brown rice, oatmeal, whole wheat, nuts, seeds, olive oil, canola oil and avocados.

People with chronically high levels of the stress hormone cortisol tend to carry excess visceral fat. Foods that are high on the glycemic index (GI), which uses a ranking system of 0 to 100, cause more rapid spikes in your blood sugar, in turn triggering the release of cortisol when glucose levels crash. The constant up and down of your blood sugar levels can also lead to insulin resistance — the first step on the road to type 2 diabetes. To help keep cortisol levels stable, choose low-GI foods (with a rating of 55 or less) like beans, lentils, and chickpeas, instead of high-GI options like white rice and potatoes. To find the GI rating of your foods, use the University of Sydney’s database at glycemicindex.com.

To burn belly fat faster and reach those six pack abs, we need to get rid of those bad habits. And take up ones that support our diet and workout routine. These are typically simple steps, but they can help to lose belly fat faster.

1- i tried to find green tea extract (Now brand) but i couldn’t find it in my country. instead i found green tea complex from GNC, each capsule is 500mg. my question is : what do u think about it? should i consider taking 2 pills 3 times per day? that’s 1000mg each time. is it too much? any side effects?

Vegetables are extremely healthy and must be included in your diet. But your body struggles to break it down when it is eaten raw. So it’s better to have steamed veggies instead of eating them raw. It’ll cut the extra efforts your stomach and gastrointestinal tract have to undergo in order to break those vegetables down.

Definitely. My question was more in relation to the recommended supplement regimen. What would I take upon waking (if anything) knowing that I can’t exercise until about 4pm? Would I still want to take the recommended morning supplements?

Now, that you know how to lose tummy fat in a week, let us know if you’ll give it a try. Follow the tips today and get a flat tummy in a week! And share your experiences with us by commenting in the box below!

• Eat cereal or oatmeal. A 2010 study of the diets of nearly 90,000 people found that those eating at least 10 grams per day of fiber—especially the kind in whole grains—had waists about three inches smaller than those who ate very little.

Never underestimate a good night’s sleep.  Since I was so heavy my untreated sleep apnea worsened over the years.  This affected my body in so many ways and I’ve finally come to comprehend the major role that restorative sleep plays in not only our weight loss, but in reducing our risk of so many modern diseases.  Your body cannot optimally regulate, repair and detoxify unless it is given the time it needs to fully perform those functions.

“Refined grains like white bread, crackers, and chips, as well as refined sugars in sweetened drinks and desserts increase inflammation in our bodies,” says Patton. “Belly fat is associated with inflammation, so eating too many processed foods will hinder your ability to lose belly fat.” Natural foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are full of antioxidants, which have anti-inflammatory properties and may therefore actually prevent belly fat, Patton says.

1. Sit ups and crunches will help you lose your belly. It might seem to make sense that if you want to lose belly fat, then you should do exercises that involve your stomach. But this is not true. Fat loss training should involve full body movements that get your heart rate cranked. And sit ups, crunches, and other typical “ab” exercises do not move the body through a great enough range of motion to garner this effect. Abdominal exercises may give you strength in your core area, but they will do little to actually […]

If your belly is where you tend to gain weight, and it’s the hardest spot to lose it, we know how self-conscious it can make you feel. Doing countless crunches won’t diminish your belly, though, so here are four ways to slim your tummy and help you feel your very best.

I got my supplements today and I’m going to start fasted training in the morning. I”m a little confused by your recommendations. Above you say to have “1 serving of Phoenix” both before training and before cardio. The bottle says 4 capsules is a serving. Are you telling me you take 8 capsules a day? Likewise and far more concerning is Forge, for which you suggest “2 servings” before both lifting and cardio. I’m 170 pounds. Is a “full dose” 6 or 8 caps for me? Let’s say it’s 7. Are you telling me I should be taking 28 caps per day?! Consume the entire bottle in 4 days???

How It’s Done: Start on all fours, toes touching the floor behind you, arms straight down from your shoulder line, palms touching the floor. Your back should be relaxed and straight, not curved or arched. As you inhale, pull your buttocks forward, tilting your pelvis and rotating your pubic bone upward. Hold for a count of three, and release.

It’s up to you. Typically if you are trying to lose weight we suggest doing fasted training and taking Forge so help out. The HMB will help spare muscle and the added yohimbine will target stubborn fat. Just make sure you have a post workout meal after with some protein. 🙂

High-volume, low-calorie greens will fill you up, without filling you out. Test panelist Kyle Cambridge says regular salads turbocharged his success: “My wife Stacie and I decided to add salad to each meal, and the pounds started melting off.” Kyle lost 25 pounds and four inches in just six weeks on the program. “I even had to buy a new belt!” he said. “But the best was when Stacie came up to me in the kitchen, and gave me a hug. She laughed and smiled and said ‘I can wrap my hands around you again.’”

The core is made up of abdominal muscles and the muscles of your lower back, pelvic floor and hips. It has a total of 15 muscles in all. So, to get a flat tummy, you need exercises like planks and push-ups to target all these muscles. These exercises include:

Exercise in small bursts. Research shows that interval training, or alternating short bursts of energy with brief resting periods, can improve muscle and build endurance more quickly than traditional exercise.[9]Interval Training for Weight Loss:

It’s true that eating at a caloric deficit downregulates your metabolism, but you don’t need to worry about starvation mode. I don’t recommend eating below your BMR, so there does come a point where increasing activity is more practical than lowering calories. Here’s how to speed up your metabolism: https://www.muscleforlife.com/how-to-speed-up-metabolism/

Hey Mike! This article was a really interesting read and opened my eyes to a few things. I had no idea about the alpha and beta fat cells. Perhaps I have more alpha cells in my belly / hips area. I am a 21 year old female, 5’8 and 135 lbs. I do about 3 days of resistance training (arms, abs, legs), and 4 days of cardio (one of which includes HIIT). I have a pretty clean diet and seriously can’t figure out why my body still looks the same after months. I’m not by any means fat or even chubby. I just have the smallest amount of fat to lose around my stomach and hips and would be happy forever if I could, but I just CAN’T seem to lose it. Do I need to do heavier weight lifting? Maybe my calorie deficit isn’t enough. I would say I eat around 1600 – 2,000 calories depending on the day. I rarely drink alcohol or eat any sweets / processed foods. What would you recommend I do different to speed up my fat-loss weight? I don’t have much money to drop on supplements unfortunately as I know they get rather pricey!

In fact, a study conducted by The University of Western Ontario showed that doing just 4 to 6 30-second sprints burns more fat over time than 60 minutes of incline treadmill walking (one of the staples of “bodybuilding cardio”).

Mike, starting my cut for summer. Am training in the morning so fasted training is fine for me. Am taking leucine, but my VPX meltdown are still yet to arrive in the mail so I was going to just get some caffeine via a strong black coffee pre-workout. Is drinking a black coffee going to spike insulin levels at all? (as I presume caffeine pills on their own do not…)

Stubborn belly fat is a major problem for many people. It doesn’t matter if you are trying to get rid of it through various diets or different exercise routines; this fat remains and seems impossible to remove. Hence, why it’s called stubborn fat!

Besides maintaining a natural circadian rhythm, there are a number of additional ways to help improve your sleep if you’re still having trouble. For a comprehensive sleep guide, please see my article “33 Secrets to a Good Night’s Sleep.”

Some people get overly jittery from yohimbine, so I recommend you start with .1 mg/kg of body weight to assess tolerance. If you feel fine, then increase to the clinically effective dosage of .2 mg/kg.

Hey Tom, congrats on the weight loss so far! As long as you remain in a calorie deficit, the beer gut will eventually disappear. Fat will come off different parts of your body at different rates, so don’t get discouraged! it’s down to your particular body, and how it likes to store fat.

Dropping tummy fat with 10 days is not really an impossible process. With the proper changes inside diet, lifestyle and exercise it’s possible to get a fat-free tummy within 10 days to weeks. It is important to use specific weight loss and exercise plans which target that abdominal area to give up tummy fat. Elevating the metabolic process is the key to lower the fat deposits in your body. Follow the approach given below to obtain flat tummy with 10 days.

If you love four-alarm food, lay off the Tabasco, barbecue sauce, and garlic for a few days while de-bloating. Spicy foods stimulate the release of stomach acid, causing irritation. Give dishes a flavor boost with in-season fresh or dried herbs such as dill, basil, mint, sage, tarragon, and rosemary. You can also use curry powder or lemon or lime juice—all perfect with fish or chicken. Also, steer clear of black pepper, nutmeg, cloves, chili powder, onions, mustard, horseradish, and acidic foods such as catsup, tomato sauce, and vinegar.

3. Exercise Ball Crunch. This is one of the most effective ways to strengthen and flatten abs.  Studies show this exercise is 40% more effective than regular ab crunches as it targets smaller muscles for flat toned abs including the oblique’s for a small waist and the outermost muscles that your typical ab crunch may miss.  To begin, lie down on the ball positioning it under the lower back.  Place arms behind your head.  Tighten your abs as you lift your torso off the ball while keeping the ball stable.  Lower back down and repeat 15 times with 1-3 sets.

Kale is the Jennifer Lawrence of superfoods, acclaimed and enjoyed by millions. Trouble is, it risks becoming the Jennifer Lawrence of superfoods, at risk of numbing overexposure. If you find the prospect of another kale salad as exciting as a plain chicken breast, opt for dinosaur kale, a.k.a. black or lacinato kale. Its dark, curly leaves are sweeter-tasting and more tender than the regular variety, but it has the same nutritional properties, like satiety-boosting fiber and other nutrients that can turn off your belly-fat genes and lead to quick weight loss.

I eat once a day, in the evening; junk carbs and grains are off my plate. (Early eating seems to stimulate my need for more meals.) I try to eat only 5~6 days in a week, fasting on the others; as well as fasting 3~ consecutive days on each seasonal change. I do not like being controlled, by others, bad habit or negative desire or thoughts. (see cheek exercise)

Hey. I’m 15 and 210 pounds. I used to play baseball, but I quit. My knees got all bad and since then I’ve gained. Is there anything I can do? Would this apply to me? If not, is there an alternative? I’d prefer not to use the powder, you know, parents and such. Thank you, I’m in real need of a confidence boost.

Honestly, you are still pretty young so I wouldn’t recommend restricting calories and dieting down. You are still growing and this is a great time to build some muscle. I would try to keep an eye on the foods you are eating and try to avoid overly processed options. As you gain some more muscle you will notice a difference in the way you look. Keep up the work in the gym. 🙂

5. Add one negative-accentuated set per exercise by slowing down the negative or lowering portion of the lift to six seconds. According to Lawson and Holman, this technique can increase fat burning from trouble areas for up to 72 hours following your workout. Use this technique on your last set of any given exercise.

Hey Mike, does it still count as fasted training if I drink protein shake 30 minutes before training ? Because most protein product come with some BCAA in them and I can’t afford to buy BCAA supplement at the moment.

Seaweed called wakame: If you haven’t heard of this seaweed native to Japan yet, you can bet you will soon. In a Japanese study at Hokkaido University led by researcher Kazuo Miyashita, PhD, fucoxanthin found in wakame was shown to promote fat burning within the fat cells in animals. Fucoxanthin fights fat in two ways; first, it encourages the action of protein, UCP1, that causes fat oxidation and is found in the type of fat that surrounds organs. Secondly, fucoxanthin promotes DHA production in the liver. Increased DHA, an omega 3 fatty acid type, can help with decreasing bad cholesterol or LDL.

Great post as always. Quick question – you said, 10g of BCAA’s when training in a fasted state. Is there a range for this and is this on the high end? I am looking at Optimum’s BCAA product and each capsule is 1,000mg (suggested serving 2). I really need to take 10 of these things or am I missing something?

You have to prevent the body from getting used to workout routines that are fixed. Hence, you may need to switch occasionally. How about running? It is a good effective way of keeping your heart rate up, lose calories, and reduce belly fat.

Use it to lose belly fat: It’s fine to enjoy a glass of wine or clear liquor every so often with a meal. But avoid soda and sugary mixers, like those used for daiquiris and margaritas. The good news? There’s no need to cut out booze completely. In fact, a 2010 study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that normal-weight women who consumed a light or moderate amount of alcohol gained less weight and had a lower risk of becoming overweight or obsess during nearly 13 years of follow-up than even non-drinkers. (That’s why moderate alcohol consumption is one way to maintain a healthy weight over time.)

You might even need to graze all day long sometimes, and look like a cute koala. The body will need some time to get used to the new routine and ‘the new you’, so you should really stay away from the unhealthy cycle of highs and lows. And the way to do is to avoid hunger.

Stay hydrated. Drinking water throughout the day may help you from feeling hungry, which will help with weight control. A glass of water before meals has been shown to help people eat less. The exact amount of water you should consume depends on your own personal chemistry. The color of your urine will show you if you’re dehydrated: if it’s dark, you should be drinking more water.[5]

This diet plan is very similar to a Mediterranean diet, containing 47 percent of calories from carbohydrates, 38 percent of calories from fat, and 15 percent of calories from protein. The majority of the fat in this diet came from extra virgin olive oil; however avocados and macadamia nuts are other good examples of foods high in monounsaturated fat.

Want to lose that belly fat? In your dreams! Seriously, though: a good night’s sleep is one of the best ways to get rid of that extra fat around your waist for good. Among the 60,000 women participating in the Nurses’ Health Study, those who snoozed for fewer than five hours a night were at the greatest risk of becoming obese and gaining 30 or more pounds over the course of the 16-year study period when compared to those who slept for seven or more hours.

If you like to start your day with oatmeal, it’s time to give yourself an upgrade. While oatmeal is a terrific breakfast, with 12 grams of protein and 8 grams of fiber per cup, oat bran is a whole other level. It packs a whopping 20 grams of muscle-building protein and 18 grams of fiber, for the same number of calories. And all that fiber is good news for your belly. Intake of the nutrient was found to be negatively associated with belly fat, according to a Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Just don’t screw it up by dumping brown sugar or syrup on it. Low-fat milk and cinnamon are the best accompaniments.

I then went on a heavy lifting program 5 days with one cardio day to try and build some muscle mass while eating at a surplus for 6 months and probably got up to 19-20% but added a half decent amount of muscle (I had very little before as a result of the long weight loss).

3. Exercise Ball Crunch – For this exercise, an exercise ball is necessary. In this routine, the abdomen does more exerting but will still need the entire body to stabilize it throughout the routine. To do this exercise, lie on the ball with your lower back fully supported. Place hands behind the head. To lift the torso off the ball, contract the abs to pull the bottom of the rib cage towards the hips. Keep ball stable as you curl up, then lower back down to stretch the abs. Do 1 to 3 sets with 12 to 16 repetitions.

No need to be perfect. Eating junk food actually helps fat loss by keeping your hormones sharp. Don’t overdo it though. Eat junk food 10% of the time max. That’s 4 junk meals/week if you eat 6 meals/day.

Sleep disorders may also lead to weight gain. One of the most common disorders, sleep apnea, is a condition in which breathing stops repeatedly during the night due to soft tissue in the throat blocking the airway.

Natural yoghurt is rich in protein and makes an excellent snack. Just add a little honey, fruit or granola. Yoghurt contains lactobacillus bacteria, which are the “good” bacteria that improves intestinal function and nutrient absorption and reduces bloating. Furthermore, yogurt can help you not just reduce bloating, but also belly fat. A study from the University of Tennessee showed that people who ate yogurt, as part of their calorie controlled diet, lost more weight, lost more belly fat, lost more inches from around their weight and lost LESS muscle mass. Indeed, they recommended that dieters should eat 3 servings of fat-free or low-fat dairy products every day.

Second, if you really need to, and can’t tolerate the fasted cardio at that point, you can have a shake after your lifting, and then proceed with HIIT cardio. Think you can get to the gym 15min earlier to extend your cardio time? Alternatively, do your stretches at home. That frees up 10min in the gym for you for cardio.

The 3-day split and cardio 3 days a week works. You could also do the 5-day split with 3 days of cardio. You’d just have a couple days where you’d do both weightlifting and cardio. The cardio could be done right after the weightlifting.

Melt Away All Your Unwanted Stubborn Body Fat in Just 14 Days. THE 2 WEEK DIET is a revolutionary new dietary system that not only guarantees to help you lose weight, it also promises to eliminate more body fat – faster than anything you’ve tried before.

Why They’re Good for You: This classic exercise will help you tone bladder muscles and help reduce risks of incontinence associated with childbirth. The more kegels you do, and the longer you hold them, the better control you will have over those leaks caused by sneezing, laughing, or picking up your baby.

I stumbled upon Mike’s website while searching for a solution to the ‘post-baby belly’. He seemed to be talking a lot of sense but I still wanted to be sure this book would be right for me before purchasing. So I emailed Mike my questions. He answered right away and was friendly, knowledgeable, positive, encouraging, and trustworthy.

Routinely squeaking by on five hours or less per night increases visceral fat levels, according to a 2010 Wake Forest University study. As you likely already know, 8 hours is the number to aim for and is ideal for losing belly fat. These 20 ways to sleep better every night can help.

However, if you think you’ll be successful “spot treating” your belly fat with crunches, think again, says Julie Buckley, a UK-based personal trainer and author of Ignite: 4 Weeks to a Leaner, Faster, and Hotter Body. “There are a few key exercises you can incorporate into your workout routine that are effective at burning fat from the belly and the rest of your body,” she says. Here, Buckley and other personal trainers share their favorite belly fat-blasting workouts that’ll help you whittle your middle—fast. (You can also fire up your metabolism and flatten your belly with the simple plan in Prevention’s new Walk Your Way to Better Health!)

Quick question RE HIIT cardio. Do you think there is any benefit or drawback to “mixing up” the type that you do. For example, I’ve pretty much exclusively been doing treadmill sprints (for whatever reason I find the movement on the recumbent bike very uncomfortable so tend to avoid it) but wondered if it might be worthwhile occasionally subbing in steep incline intervals, or even switch to the rowing machine from time to time.

10. Get on a Sleeping Schedule – The last yet most important tip is to get on a sleeping schedule. The same way you have an alarm to wake up, you should create an alarm to go to sleep. It may take some time to get into this habit but it is well worth it! Turn off all of the lights and get rid of distractions. Whatever is going on, on social media will be there in the morning. Say goodnight to facebook, instagram and twitter and hello to www.dream.com.

Start each day by making a large pitcher of “spa water”—that’s detox water filled with sliced whole lemons, oranges or grapefruits—and make a point of sipping your way through at least 8 glasses before bedtime. Citrus fruits are rich in the antioxidant delimonene, a powerful compound found in the peel that stimulates liver enzymes to help flush toxins from the body and gives sluggish bowels a kick, according to the World Health Organization.

The lower belly is one of those seriously frustrating body parts, and it’s not even an entire body part, it’s part of a body part – the lower bit of your tummy. This vexing semi-body part is the bane of anyone who’s lost weight, toned up, put in the hard work, done everything right, but just can’t seem to shift that lower belly bulge. Arrgh! That little belly bulge standing between you and a flat tummy. It is a tricky problem, but a fixable one. There are 3 causes of the lower belly bulge:
